unfair as it may be to draw comparisons, this blog is about observations made by the writer about the writer's environment, wherever that may be at a given time. And the observation in this post is that Adelaide cheapened out on sprucing up the city at Christmas - which I think has been noted widely. Finally today, there are ribbons and decorations going up on Leigh Street - but Hindley, Rundle and Gouger streets, along with North Terrace are neglected. Hutt Steet has some sad bows on the trees. The observation was largely that Christmas is a big deal here, whereas in NY most of the population doesn't celebrate Christmas, but they do go all out decorating.

I think it is unfair to compare Adelaide to New York, and also equally unfair to compare New York to Adelaide.
Both cities are unique in very different ways.
Why not celebrate Adelaide's Xmas pageant, the largest of its kind in the world, where thousand of hours by local people are given for free, where children wait behind the blue line of honour to wave to Santa. The brewery lights which I remember as a child, Adelaide Arcade with its rich history and fabulous decorations!
Or better yet talk about the balmy Sunday evening we spent last weekend, enjoying a drink and watching cousins and friend's children ranging in age from 2 to 24yrs laughing and having a water fight!!
Adelaide is never going to be New York, THANK GOD! we have a wonderful community of people who have known each other for years, a gentle city with gardens, open space, and quirky interesting places to go if you are keen to explore. Beautiful beaches, lovely homes, easy lifestyle, traffic jams that last for 30 mins!and parking just about anywhere. Sure we may be at times limited with what is on offer in the shops, but these days it is but a mouse click away!
Unlike your November post where you talked about "even the occasional gunshots and police helicopters " being Ok! In the wake of the horror of last weeks shootings in the gun crazed USA, I would have thought that a little more love should have been expressed for little old Adelaide, where kids go to school and come home! To be part of a society that doesnt think that assault weapons should be part of family life.
Time to compare like for like, not 'Big Apples" with " Sweet Oranges'!

S, the bunny is a prelude to a dog one day. We will see how we all do with Miffy first - since she is somewhat less work than a dog. She is beautiful and we are all a bit gaga over her. Groucho would approve, I'm sure ..x

You forgot the outrageous tipping and the endless school performances and obligatory parties with one's dull superiors, the secret Santa gifts to and from strangers and the short and dark days. You forgot the fantasy of faraway land with no Xmas!

Lee, I remember as a little girl, the gorgeous windows of John Martins or was it David Jones in Rundle Street? Each different and all beautiful. It was such a lovely thing to do as a little girl.. view each window display with great excitement.

I too fondly recall Christmas in Adelaide as exciting, festive and yes, in the past, well decorated. But this year - I dunno. I used to remember being excited to come to the city from the country and see the streets lined with bows, banners and glittering decorations. But lately, and this year in particular - nothing. A couple of tired banners which have been reused for the last few years hang droopily from the street poles. I'm hoping a quick trip to the Lobethal Lights midweek will help restore my cheer. I think this could be the trip you need as well, my dear.
Oh, and while we are on the topic of workplace Christmas celebrations - one year a previous workplace of mine was banned from playing Christmas carols in the entrance on Christmas eve - it was deemed inappropriate and discriminatory. I was beyond disappointed.

For all the Adelaide folk freaking out reading this and worrying that I might be wallowing in perpetual misery - I'm ok, really. The reality is that moving from one home to another is stressful. Insert disclaimer here: it is not reflection on Adelaide - a beautiful, charming city with loads of good things and potential. xL
